Whelligan
Whelligan is both the man and a band from Merseyside, England. Songwriter and singer Jamie Whelligan is a pop troubadour in the classic late 1960s mode. A busker on the London Underground, an actor in arthouse film, and a voice compared to Paul Heaton and Scott Walker.
Whelligan’s songs mine that English vein of quirky, psychedelic guitar pop that Merseyside bands are famous for. With songs spinning effortlessly from one thing to another, fans of XTC, Syd Barrett, and Rutles won’t be disappointed. As befits a troubadour, the Whelligan ensemble comes in many shapes and sizes; but the music remains unmistakably that of Jamie Whelligan. With two albums and several EPs under his belt there is much to enjoy in his back catalogue.
Recent years have seen Whelligan focusing on a side-project called Annexe The Moon. A modern-psyche collaboration with award winning BBC Sound Designer/Producer Phil Channell (#1 podcast Death In Ice Valley). Their singles such as Full Stop have been firm favourites on BBC6 Music, with regular plays by Guy Garvey, Radcliffe and Maconie, Vic Galloway, Marc Riley and Steve Lamaqc.
Though primarily a songwriting/production team, Annexe The Moon have also performed a number of augmented reality ‘happenings’ at Tate Liverpool and Metropolis Studios London, showcasing the potential of 3d recording and immersive audio technologies.
2020 sees the first of a new crop of Whelligan tunes, and a new album lined up for 2021. Produced by Nick Frater (Big Stir Records/Great Sheiks) his trademark sonic fairy-dust brings the magic of Whelligan’s tunes to your ears. Magpie-eyed vocals harmonise over warm and wiry guitars, while inventive lyrics are matched with floating melodies. We are you’ll enjoy a trip down this rabbit hole.
